The toothpick is a thin stick, usually made of wood or plastic, that can be inserted into the interdental space. It's used to remove food residue trapped in these spaces.
BUT IS THE USE SAFE FOR YOUR ORAL HEALTH?
Well, using toothpicks is a risk. We don't really pay attention to what we do when we use it, which is a high risk of pushing it into our gums. A wound can open and the barrier to infection is broken. Too frequent use of the toothpick can therefore cause oral problems such as gingivitis if dental plaque bacteria enter the wound.
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. It can affect or even destroy the bone that supports the teeth. This infection is caused by plaque bacteria, a colourless substance on the surface of the teeth made up of salivary proteins but also bacteria, toxins and foods made up of different sugars or that are acidic. It can be eliminated by good daily dental brushing and flossing. In an advanced case, the teeth may start to move or even fall out.
PROBLEMS OTHER THAN GINGIVITIS CAN OCCUR WHEN USING TOOTHPICKS:
Some toothpicks made in Asia contain carcinogens, which is a problem because they are put in our mouths.
In addition, people sometimes swallow their toothpicks, which is not without risk since 79% of these toothpicks end up causing nicks in the intestines, which leads to infections and even perforations.
DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT! WE HAVE A SOLUTION FOR YOU:
Please note that there is no substitute for using a toothbrush several times a day and that it doesn't exempt you from flossing at all.
To compensate for the use of the toothpick, there are several solutions:
Nothing beats flossing to remove food residue while respecting your gums.
There are also interdental brushes that work the same way.
Finally, if you're at work or elsewhere and don't have this on hand, you can take a sugar-free chewing gum that will not replace toothbrush or floss but will neutralize the acidity of bacteria and may reduce their attack on your tooth enamel.
However, you can order your Y-Brush toothbrush and take it with you anywhere to keep your dental health up to date. Its nylon bristles remove plaque while taking care of the gums in just 10 seconds!
