Relieve pain for sensitive teeth

Soulager la douleur pour les dents sensibles - Y-Brush

Regular dental appointments are just as important as doctor's appointments, especially if you start to experience constant toothache after eating cold food or drinks.

It is important to find the source of your sensitivity in order to recommend treatment. To relieve the pain in the meantime, there are home remedies that you can try until your next dental appointment.

4 home remedies for pain relief

1. Desensitizing toothpaste

Desensitizing toothpaste contains compounds that help protect the nerve endings of the teeth. The most active ingredient is potassium nitrate, a compound that blocks pain signals from a nerve in the tooth to your brain.

After a few uses, your sensitivity will decrease. Dentists also recommend using a soft-bristle toothbrush and low-acid or fluoride mouthwashes.

2. Salt water rinse

Salt is an effective antiseptic and can also help reduce inflammation. To relieve the symptoms of sensitive teeth pain, gargle with a salt water rinse twice a day.

For a salt water rinse :

Add ½ to ¾ teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and mix well.

Shake the solution in your mouth for a maximum of 30 seconds.

Spit out the solution.

3. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a mild antiseptic and disinfectant. It is commonly used to help sterilize cuts, burns, and other wounds to prevent infection. You can also use peroxide as a mouthwash to heal gums and prevent inflammation.

To use hydrogen peroxide as mouthwash :

Add two capfuls of hydrogen peroxide to 3 percent equal parts warm water.

Shake the solution in your mouth for up to 30 seconds.

Spit out the solution.

Then rinse your mouth with water to remove any remaining hydrogen peroxide.

4. Honey and hot water

Honey is an antibacterial agent and can be used for wound management. Honey can help speed healing and reduce pain, gum swelling and inflammation.

To reduce pain in sensitive teeth, rinse your mouth with warm water and a spoonful of honey. This rinse will promote healing of the mouth.

Prevention

Although home remedies can temporarily relieve pain, there are some things you can do to prevent further damage to your teeth.

Prevention methods include :

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene to keep your teeth and mouth clean,
  • Use a softer brush to avoid irritation and abrasion,
  • Limit the amount of acidic foods and drinks you eat to avoid dissolving tooth enamel,
  • schedule regular visits to the dentist,
  • use a mouthguard at night if you grind your teeth.
